Massachusetts Prosecutorial Brutality

One female friend went to a Massachusetts jail for six months because she lacked the $15 dollars to see a social worker which was part of her parole. Her original crime was to break a few windows which her father promptly paid for. It was her first offense. Once she was in jail, I tried to help her get out. I found out, however, that the appeal process took longer than six months. There was no way to get her out. She lost her job. Her father had to pay her mortgage as her social security benefits stopped while she was in jail. The state had to pick up a $30,000 tab for her incarceration (See Penal Costs in Massachusetts). Everybody lost except the people who make their money running prisons…

The son of another friend went to jail for six months for a first offense. He was also on parole. His mother didn’t get him to a parole meeting on time. He was on parole for being in a vehicle with someone that had some pot in his car. This incarceration cost his hardworking mother dearly. She only made about $10/hour. The incarceration also cost the state tens of thousands.
